On Tuesday, January 24, 2012 the Medical Assistant Program (MAP) students journeyed out to Iwilei on a field trip to the City Morgue.
Roland Yap, the Forensic Scientist who lead our group was very informative and funny.
Upon return to the school, sudents shared their most memorable part of the excursion. Mahina stated, “When the guy mentioned that they speak for the dead. That in finding out how they died we could possible improve the way we live. I never really thought about that.”

One of the other students asked if Roland ever had any of his friends or family come through the morgue and he said he did. The students than asked him, “Wasn’t it hard for you knowing the person that is in your morgue?” Roland’s reply will stick in the minds of a few of our students for a while. He said, “You need to suppress your emotions and put your “game face” on. I just remember what I am doing and what I am doing it for. I’m here to speak for the dead and possibly see if there is anything I can learn to improve our way of living.” For most of us, the thing that will stay with us for a while is the unique, yet powerful odor that enveloped us as we entered the morgue.
