Data Validations, Conditional Formatting and Ala Moana Shopping Center

HTI’s campus right down the boulevard – Ala Moana, that is – from Ala Moana Shopping Center, once deemed the world’s largest open-air shopping center in the world.  This benefit enables our instructors to be creative in their approaches to learning and having fun while doing it.

At 11AM on November 18th, OTM students once again headed to the stores and restaurants throughout Ala Moana Shopping Center to collect data. They were asked to gather from stores: barcodes, item labels, prices, types of items, and if the items were on sale, to collect the sales percentages.  From restaurants, they gathered prices from the menus and interviewed staff members and managers about each restaurant. Pictures were taken at each location and along with the data gathered, the class created different styles of templates using pictures, graphs and diagrams.

Students learned how to create formulas upon which to use different data validations and conditional formatting.  Each worksheet they create will reflect the stores and restaurants they visited and the data they gathered via either a restaurant mini menu or a marketing brochure about a particular stores.
