2010 Community Reinvestment Activities
October 2, 2010 - The concepts of ho`iho`i, giving back and laulima,
work together, is interwoven in the fabric that make up HTI. These
concepts, which are instilled in our students inside and outside of the
classrooms, has enhanced the lives of our students and staff a like.
Our
customary trip for the OTM 7 class to Ka Papa Lo`i o Kanewai, the
University of Hawai`i at Mānoa taro patch, brought a new flare as we
were able to rub elbows not only with the students of UH but also the
freshmen of Kumu Kapua’s class from Kamehameha. The experience of
cleaning the kalo with the use of the opihi shell was a first for many.
But, the cleaning of the lo`i and feeling the healing mud between your
toes is still the highlight of the experience at Kanewai.
The
organizational skills of our fashion conscience students was greatly
appreciated when they went to the HIS Women’s shelter to help with lunch
service and organizing their donation closet.
Another agency
that has been blessed repeatedly by our students is the River of Life on
Pauahi Street. The staff their was extremely grateful for the helping
hands as our students assisted in breakfast service and preparing lunch
for that day as well as the preparation of meals for the next.
Our
last and newest addition to our community reinvestment family is the
Foster Botanical Garden. Our students assisted in landscaping and
learning of the different plants in a totally peaceful and serene
environment.
The sharing of knowledge and the giving of oneself
does not only happen in the classroom and within the walls of the
school. The experience of working in the community and sharing of
knowledge and adventures still lives on here at HTI.
