Monday - November 24, 2008Thanksgiving. What is Thanksgiving? Have you ever pondered or asked yourself this question? We at Hawaii Technology Institute (HTI) may be able to put some of those questions to rest.
Although it was two days before Thanksgiving, the students and staff had what looked to be “Thanksgiving with the Family”, Tuesday night November 25th. The feeling of giving, sharing and being thankful could be felt as we stood, hand in hand, while the pule (prayer) was being said. Being thankful for what we have, no matter how big or small, how little or abundant the amount. Never taking for granted what we have. The house that you live in or the car you sleep in, the warm water in your shower at home or the bucket you fill with cold water from a public bathroom when it’s time to soap up and rinse. Even though we rarely stop to think about those things we consistently take for granted, we truly have a lot to be thankful for.
On this Thanksgiving event at HTI, as you looked around there were so many things to be thankful for. The ability to strive for knowledge, the desire to keep going and not get distracted from our goals, the friendships and the memories made while here AND all the good food that’s always available to eat. As one stood in line to make a plate, all around were students and staff in conversation, smiles and laughter coming from everywhere – a simply good feeling. This certainly is what Thanksgiving is all about. Sharing what you have with people you’re walking through life alongside and feeling great joy doing it. Another one of those days at HTI. With all this and more, you just have to say “Thank You.”
