Kaka'ako Access Project

Thursday - November 6, 2008

It always amazes me how innovative the facilitators of Hawai`i Technology Institute are when developing projects and designing different methods to learning.  On November 6th,  students in the current Office Technology Management class spent the day at Kaka`ako State Park working on none other than… a Microsoft Access project!  The excursion wasn’t just about learning how to apply the software using a real-life simulation; the activity was also combined with a barbeque, swimming at the beach, and playing games.  By far, it wasn’t just another day at the park.  Students were required to come up with a data table and to decide which fields would be used in it using different plants in the area as the data type.

Once back in the computer lab, the group will need to produce the respective forms and queries and reports that coincide with the data gathered.  But how ingenious it was and is – having fun while learning.  “What a concept!”

It has always been said, “Learning is proportional to the amount of fun one is having,” and based on the scrumptious lunch staff and students alike enjoyed, it’s safe to say that there was A LOT of learning going on!  The menu consisted of char-siu chicken, Hawaiian Salted steak, hot dogs, and all the salad you could eat, both potato / macaroni and tossed greens.  There were li-hing mui pineapple slices and kamaboku dip and chips.  And after lunch, some students lounged and played Dominos and Hanafuda in the shade while others went swimming.   It was obvious the Gods were in agreement with what was going on because everyone was blessed with a perfect beautiful, balmy day on the south shore of O`ahu.
