Who We Are

HTI promotes learning that takes place in a fast-paced environment modeling real life experiences.  Our instructors bring years of experience and professional accomplishment to the classroom.  They share skills and industry knowledge that will help prepare you for success in your chosen field.

Faculty:

Erleen Ah You - Medical Assistant Instructor

Erleen Ah You brings more than 30 years of licensed practical nursing experience to HTI. Additionally, she has a Bachelor's degree in Health Administration and a Master's degree in Public Health from the University of Hawaii.  Erleen enjoys reading, crafts and plays the bass and flute in a church band.  Being in the classroom is something that Erleen has become passionate about and loves the uniqueness in each of her students.


Lono Baldado - Pharmacy Technician Program Instructor

Lono Baldado comes to HTI with experience as an instructor by way of the Philippines and Utah. He has a Bachelor of Secondary Education General Science from Philippine Normal University and is a few classes away from achieving his Master of Education Curriculum and Teaching degree. Lono brings vibrant youthfulness that's a refreshing change to his many colleagues who are seasoned with age and wisdom. A talented singer who is active in non-secular activities with the youth, Lono's skills and talents as an instructor is a welcomed addition to HTI's team.


Kamice Benjamin - Allied Health Instructor

Kamice Benjamin brings more than 10 years of experience to HTI both as an Allied Health instructor and an employee in the health field. Kamice is a certified Medical Assistant (CMA) and attended Medix School in Towson, Maryland. Kamice is also certified in CPR and a certified Allied Health instructor. Her instructor skills are complemented by her confidence in her computer skills. Kamice's students benefit from her love of teaching and her passion for things that are Allied Health related. Outside of school, Kamice's precocious daughter Aisha keeps her really busy and reminds her of how much fun it is to be a mom.


Fernando Calibuyot - Health Information Technology/Medical Billing & Coding

Fernando comes to HTI with a wealth of experience as a Medical Coder where he has worked the gamut of running his own business to training trainers to auditing work performed by other coders in both private and public sectors. Currently, Fernando is the Medical Coding Auditor with the Department of Defense 15th Med Group, Hickam Air Force Base. The knowledge, skills and abilities that he brings with him have definitely enhanced the credibility and strength of both the Health Information Technology and Medical Billing  & Coding Programs.

Kimberly Conner - Pharmacy Technician Program Instructor

Kimberly Conner brings more than 20 years of successful experience in the pharmacy industry to HTI. She has a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and demonstrates knowledge of ICD-9 and PCT/HCPCS codes. HTI is fortunate to have someone with Kim's extensive experience as a pharmacy technician on our team and the students will benefit immensely from the cadre of skills this veteran pharmacy technician brings to the classroom.


Mel-Ann-Kapri Kahawai - Computer Instructor/Placement Coordinator

Mel-Ann-Kapri Kahawai (Makamae) brings more than 4 years of administrative skills to HTI. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language with a Minor in Economics from Stanford University. Makamae is also one of our in-house industry-standard certified Microsoft Office Specialists and is one of HTI's instructors assigned to the HTI & Department of Public Safety's collaborative efforts. She also assists with career development and internship placement activities and coordinates and teaches students who opt to do one-on-one computer sessions. Makamae's versatility coupled with her amazing ability to effectively multi-task and complete assigned tasks well before deadlines bring much value to HTI. Makamae enjoys picture taking and cooking on her free time.


Desiree Kane - Keyboarding Instructor/Project Assistant

Desiree Kane (Noe) has a combination of work and life experiences that makes her an invaluable part of our team. Having lived life experiences that most of our students can relate to, Noe has an added advantage and a compassionate point of reference when working with students. Keyboarding keeps Noe busy, especially as she constantly strives to improve her own speed and someday hope to type 100 WPM. Noe is a Heald College graduate with an Associate in Applied Science degree and effectively plays the project assistant role where and when necessary with various HTI assignments.


Ernest Mika - Personal & Professional Development Instructor
Ernest Mika (Papa) is HTI's seasoned instructor and resident kupuna (elder). He comes to us with a vast array of skills and experience garnered in and out of the classroom. Papa Mika, as he is affectionately known to the HTI ohana (family) is an ordained minister who often provides both students and staff with guidance on issues and concerns that are part and parcel of living life. He brings more than his fair share of spirit and soul to the school and coupled with his charisma and candor, Papa has a unique way of relating to both students and staff that makes rubbing shoulders with this kupuna moments to treasure!

Scott Stettenbenz - Medical Billing & Coding Instructor
Scott Stettenbenz comes to HTI with a broad range of experience in Medical Billing & Coding. He has working knowledge of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and the International Classification of Diseases Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). Working in-field and bringing his industry experience to the classroom he has been an invaluable asset to the HTI team and to our students. Thanks to Scott, our students are kept abreast of the latest trends in the industry. When not in the classroom or at work, Scott spends time with his girlfriend and beautiful daughter in fun family activities.

Jason Sutton - Allied Health Instructor
Jason Sutton comes to us with over 10 years of experience in Medical Assisting. He has an Associate of Science degree from Anthem College. Jason is also certified in CPR & BLS Instructor, APHTLS, EMT-B, BAT testing, drug screen collection and various other training. Jason is our in-house CPR/First Aid Instructor and shares his competence in areas critical to success in Allied Health careers to prepare students for the workforce. Jason has also capitalized on his professional network and contacts to help HTI with internship placements and donations for the school's medical lab.

Shantell-Tiare Tom - Computer Instructor/Placement Coordinator
Shantell-Tiare Tom (Hoku) brings over 5 years of classroom experience to HTI. With a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies with a Minor in Business Management from Hawaii Pacific University (HPU), Hoku has adapted very well to performing duties outside of her major - a testament to her ability to learn fast and be flexible and adaptable. Hoku recently took on the responsibilities of Career Development and Internship Placement with the Office Technology Management program. She is one of our in-house Microsoft Office Specialist with industry-standard certifications to validate that claim! Hoku enjoys reading and writing during her leisure time and uses her talent as a former HPU band member to help the Waianae Intermediate School band.

Megan Vertido - Computer Instructor
Megan Vertido comes to HTI with more than 5 years of technological experience. She has an Associate's of Science degree in Information Technology Systems from Kapiolani Community College. Megan comes with a wide-range of computer skills and heads her own web design company with some reputable local companies as clients. Megan occasionally conducts special interest computer classes for staff and showcases some of the computer skills that propelled her to start her own company at such a young age.

Frank Ward — Medical Instructor
Frank Ward brings more than 25 years of nursing and management experience to HTI’s classroom.  Specializing in cardiac care, Frank has assisted in the development of top-performing cardiac departments in several hospitals.  In addition to teaching at HTI, he also provides clinical supervision and instruction to students in hospital clinical settings.
